Children and adults with ADHD constantly struggle to maintain their focus for long periods of time. Behavioral therapy teaches children with ADHD to complete tasks by establishing mini-goals, allowing them to do small things that will eventually accomplish the entire task. Several years ago, scientists discovered why people turn to chocolate during a bad day. Chocolate contains high concentrations of PEA, which causes short term mood enhancement and improved attention. While the levels of PEA in the average bar of chocolate are not high enough to make a doctor prescribe eating chocolate to overcome ADHD, researchers are still testing the effects of PEA on ADHD symptoms. Once ingested, your child will experience a burst of hyperactive energy before crashing shortly after. This type of chocolate also contains artificial preservatives, flavoring, and coloring, which have been found to trigger ADHD symptoms. Milk is also often added to chocolate to improve the taste and consistency, but milk also contains casein - a complex protein that cannot be digested properly. In its undigested form, casein can create opioid peptides, which produces a sedative effect once it reaches the brain through the bloodstream.
If you're really curious about the effect of chocolate on your child's behavior, use pure dark chocolate instead. Dark chocolate not only contains less sugar and no artificial additives; it also has the highest concentration of PEA. While dark chocolate shouldn't be used as a primary treatment for ADHD, perhaps giving a piece or two when it's time to do homework won't hurt.
