If you're thinking about buying your chocolate protein drink from a store, STOP! I have bought several of them, and they were all equally terrible, literally some of the worst substances I have ever tasted.
Though the nutritional profile of these products is good, the taste is so rancid you'll have to hold your nose and force it down as quickly as possible. I don't know what the manufacturers decided to put in the sweeteners, but it's so horrible that I wouldn't' use these chocolate protein drinks if they were free.
Now there may be a few store brands that taste okay, but I certainly haven't found them. If you buy a brand from a store, make sure you look it up online first.
Higher Power Protein
The Higher Power supplement company makes one of the best chocolate protein drinks I have ever had.
The main attraction of this product is its low price. I usually bought 5-pound containers for about 25-30 dollars. This works out to 40 cents per 25-gram serving of protein. Compare this to 80 cents for a 25-protein-gram container of tuna, and you know you've got a crazy good price.
The taste and mixability, while not excellent, are fine enough for everyday use. If you're on a tight budget and want something that still tastes good, this is the chocolate protein drink for you.
Optimum Nutrition Protein
Optimum Nutrition makes the chocolate protein drink that I currently buy every time I order more protein. Though the price is not QUITE as low as Higher Power's, it is still cheap, and the taste and mixability are great.
The price is about 80 dollars for a 10 pound bag. (By the way, I recommend you buy any protein powder in as large a container as possible, in order to get the best price per serving). This works out to about 53 cents per 25-gram serving, still cheaper than any whole food protein source.
The taste of the chocolate protein drink is excellent. The mixability is the best of any protein powder available. In fact, the company instantizes the powder, which allows you to mix it without a shaker! All you need is a big cup and a spoon to stir.
